A second year of success for IBM and the CyberFirst programme

In a year in which digital technologies have risen in popularity, we are reminded of the importance of securing these vital systems. Dependable electronic communication and interaction is essential to our society. When cybersecurity skills are in high levels of demand, action to ensure sustainable availability within the UK is a critical area of interest. IBM has a proud history of supporting educational initiatives across the globe and is committed towards making the digital era inclusive . A secure and successful future requires new thinking and participants from all backgrounds. This requires that the cybersecurity industry providing diverse and accessible development opportunities. To maximise our chances of success in a time of rapid change and uncertainty, we must ensure that those we entrust with the safeguarding of our society represent every element of it.
Achieving these objectives requires IBM to challenge traditional assumptions on recruitment, our relationships with external organisations and our role as a leader within the security industry.

To support our development objectives within the UK cybersecurity industry, IBM is a longstanding partner of the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) CyberFirst programme. The CyberFirst programme aims to help identify and develop future UK Cyber Security professionals. Since 2018, IBM has supported undergraduate students through educational and developmental placements and contributed towards the CyberFirst Girls Competition. We provided the largest numbers of educational placements within the industry sector and alongside the other industry partners, shared our insight and expertise to support the programme development.

In recognition of IBM’s efforts, IBM was awarded the 2019-2020 industry champion award. This was the second consecutive year for IBM to win the award and demonstrates the continued commitment towards the CyberFirst programme and the impact within it.

With an ever-increasing number of success stories and milestones the CyberFirst programme has continued to excel. This continued success has shown that co-operation between industry and government can create a vibrant ecosystem of organisations and professionals. Within that ecosystem we can see the fusion of opportunities, aspirations and resources shape individual lives at pivotal moments. Whilst we are just starting to see some early benefits now, the true industry and cultural benefits will emerge in the years ahead.

Currently, the cybersecurity professional talent pool can be treated as an economic public good. It can be tempting to rely on the actions of others to ensure a sustainable future. Despite the attractions of a passive approach, organisations who more actively participate and engage will be better placed to benefit from market improvements. For organisations who rely on a skill based competitive advantage, effective talent management is a necessity. Engaging with programmes such as CyberFirst provide a rare strategic opportunity to transform traditional viewpoints. Organisations can be more proactive in developing the skills and attributes they seek to recruit rather than relying on academia alone.

A successful UK cybersecurity industry helps all within it and all who rely on it. Within IBM we have access to an incredible range of experts, thought leaders and educational resources and will continue to use them in line with our long-held values and community commitments.
