MobileID: ID verification with IBM Cloud

Share this post:

Thanks to the internet, business is more globalised than ever. But with fewer face-to-face transactions, how can organisations be sure that potential customers are who they say they are? At MobileID, we’re providing an answer with our ID verification mobile apps built in the IBM Cloud.

Solving the identity puzzle

Building trusted relationships is an essential part of doing business. Companies want to know who they are interacting with to protect themselves and their legitimate customers from fraud. Enterprises are also subject to regulations, from the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to anti-money laundering rules, that require them to authenticate the identity of their customers.

Existing ID verification processes are often slow and costly. MobileID wanted to develop efficient, compliant ID verification tools that would safeguard both businesses and consumers. To ensure our solutions were fast, cost-efficient and secure, we began looking for the right technology platform.

Getting to market fast

IBM global leadership in secure computing made it a natural choice of vendor. With IBM Cloud, we could keep development speed high while controlling costs. It also enables us to scale up rapidly once we’ve launched our mobile apps.

Rather than creating everything from scratch, MobileID developers reuse tried-and-tested code and take advantage of automation in the IBM Cloud. We estimate that this cut programming effort by around 75 percent, enabling us to make better use of specialist developer skills.

We built a super-agile ID verification API, which can be adapted to industry-specific requirements. Our first prototype was ready in just seven months, significantly ahead of target.

Giving businesses peace of mind

With help from IBM, we released our first offering: TenantID, a mobile app targeted at the property rental sector. It gives landlords a one-stop solution for the validation of potential tenants’ identities.

Landlords can upload photos of a person’s identity documents and enter their email address for GDPR, Right to Rent and referencing functions. For extra protection, users can purchase a risk-based assessment of how likely it is that a person is telling the truth about their identity.

With IBM Cloud enabling agile development, we plan to release a new sector-specific mobile app every three months. We are also exploring blockchain ID verification solutions with support from IBM.

With our highly secure, compliant and fast-response solutions, we are primed to capture market share. The flexibility of IBM Cloud means we will be able to scale up quickly as we launch new products and grow the MobileID business.
