IBM viert vandaag, vrijdag 12 augustus, de 30ste verjaardag van de machine die de wereld grondig veranderde. Op 12 augustus 1981 stelde Don Estridge tijdens een druk bijgewoonde persconferentie in het Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, de IBM 5150 aan pers en publiek voor. De IBM PC vond zijn weg naar de huiskamer en de werkvloer. De wereld zou voorgoed veranderen.
Philippe ‘Don’ Estridge werd binnen IBM belast om een gebuiksvriendelijke microcomputer te ontwikkelen, die men mee naar huis kon nemen en die niet meer mocht kosten dan ongeveer 1.500 USD. Esteridge verzamelde een team van 12 ingenieurs rond zich – the dirty dozen zoals ze zichzelf noemden. Omdat zelf ontwerpen te duur zou worden, ging Estridge en zijn team op zoek naar bestaande onderdelen, die in serie – dus goedkoop – geproduceerd werden. Door de microprocessor van Intell en software van Microsoft te gebruiken, slaagde IBM er in om de kostprijs te drukken.
