Take out complexity and deliver business value with hybrid multicloud

Taking cloud to scale has proven a challenge for many organizations. 60% of European organizations are still running their business-critical application on-premise, and have not yet moved the majority of applications in a hybrid or multicloud architecture, according to IDC’s 2021 Multicloud survey of 925 IT and business decision makers from across Europe from August 2021.

Complexities around cost management, appropriate governance models that help with security but don’t hamper innovation and developing the right organizational structures to combine IT operations and devops methodologies are hindering an accelerated path into the cloud. Most cloud migrations in Europe fail due to performance and reliability issues (28% of European organizations), lack of user acceptance of cloud services and tools (26% of European organizations) and lack of integration with on-premises applications, other cloud services and edge solutions (25% of European organizations) as shown by IDC’s 2021 Multicloud survey.

Getting hybrid multicloud right is critical for digital business success, but skills shortage puts a spanner into many cloud strategies. To overcome these challenges, European organizations are putting in place a cloud center of excellence (CCoE). 52% of European organizations have at least partially implemented a cloud center of excellence with another 24% planning to adopt one in the near future.

The key tasks of the CCoE are:

  • Ensuring alignment between business and cloud strategy
  • Introducing DevOps methodology
  • Monitoring resource usage to control cloud cost

Implementing a CCoE correctly helps with many tasks that are critical to successfully execute on the cloud strategy. Driving cultural and organizational change from traditional ITIL processes in IT operations to an agile way of working requires new skills, but also new governance models and controls, that don’t stifle innovation yet make sure that costs and security are not getting out of hand. When adding public cloud services to the IT mix, organizations do not control all parts of the process yet need to put end-to-end controls in place, both to ensure reliability of operations but also to ensure the right security posture. As many organisations are still at the beginning of their cloud journey, they are struggling to find the right people with cloud skills and turn to service providers for help to get started and set up a CCoE correctly from the start.
