Every application has different needs in terms of infrastructure, data capacity and bandwidth. This requires a cloud with diverse options, suiting the needs of every application, their users and developers. Multicloud offers just that – a cloud environment with different solutions from every possible provider. But how do you adopt multicloud-by-design? So you can give freedom to developers and users while mitigating lock-in risks with a single cloud provider?Cloud adoption is growing at a fast rate and the end is not yet in sight.
By 2020, 90% of IT buyers will use multiple cloud services and about $64 billion will be spent on private and public cloud services. That’s twice the amount spent in 2016. This huge growth is no surprise: for many businesses cloud is the launchpad for innovation. Cloud services have enabled developers and engineers to leverage infrastructure resources instantly to build new apps. This has resulted in multiple islands of innovation.
Multicloud maturity framework
Anno 2019 organizations face a new challenge regarding cloud. How to integrate the innovation islands in a uniform, sustainable cloud environment? In the IDC Analyst Connection whitepaper it points them in the right direction with predictions and advise. For instance, with a multicloud maturity framework. This will help business to determine if their cloud environment is ready for multicloud. The framework includes five dimensions where enterprises need to make progress to create a successful multicloud strategy:
- Cloud vision
- Economics
- Process and compliance
- Technology
- People and culture
Making the right choices
The first steps towards a successful multicloud are making a cloud strategy, determining your current and future software needs. Next to choosing the right supplier. Which solution offers the functionality, upscale possibilities, integration options which you need today and in the future? The IDC whitepaper also reveals a few guidelines. To keep an eye out for innovation accelerators like IoT, robotics, blockchain and AI. And make sure not only IT, but also the business units, finance and production leads are involved.
The next step towards a sustainable multicloud is making sure your organization has the manpower and skills to build and implement a multicloud. Do your employees have the right skillset and capabilities? And if not, how will you get these? By training and retaining your employees or recruiting new ones?
All in all, the choices are numerous. It’s up to you to make the right ones to ensure your multicloud environment will be fit-for-purpose. And above all, a solid foundation for a sustainable digital transformation.
