Cognitive start with migration to the cloud with VMware

Share this post:

IBM has traditionally focused strongly on genuine technology innovation. Within IBM, we sometimes tend to get lost sketching visions and prospects. While this is both valuable and extremely important, many of the current challenges of CIOs and IT managers tend to be rather basic. Take the migration of your own company’s center. This may sound sexy, but it is, in fact, the foundation for everything you can achieve in the near future with cognitive computing, platforms, conversation systems and more.

Seamless migration from the old environment is much simpler than many people think. It is also not true that every random cloud is sufficient in terms of perspective and management. There are fundamental differences between the clouds offered by Microsoft, Amazon and IBM, for example.

Agnostic

Many customers display a considerable interest in the cloud, but do not yet know where to begin. Frequently customers consider ‘modifying’ existing applications to make the suitable for the cloud. They want to do this in a vendor-agnostic manner, so that the applications can run in the multiple suppliers’ clouds. This is an expensive and time-consuming process, for which it is frequently impossible to create a business case. But organizations want the flexibility to be able to experiment, innovate and scale up.

Another approach is to migrate existing legacy applications from the company’s data center to the cloud. An environment that is virtualized based on VMware can be transferred to the cloud in its entirety relative simply, sometimes even within one day. This allows companies and IT managers to keep using their trusted applications without constant, expensive investments in hardware and management costs.

Interaction

The added value of the IBM Cloud over those of other large suppliers is its extensive level of integration and control. It’s like this: VMware originally laid the foundation for large-scale server virtualization, but at its core lacked knowledge of the cloud. Several years ago – in collaboration with IBM technicians – the company began thinking about how to optimally apply virtualization in the cloud. VMware has extensive knowledge of its product; we have the know-how and experience regarding in-house services.

The IBM Cloud not only makes it possible to migrate quickly; it also provides a considerable level of control. Availability, security, capacity and performance can all be managed at the application level. After all, we sit low in the stack; the virtualized data center runs directly on a ‘bare metal’ cloud environment. The existing infrastructure can simply be “shoved in”! And anyone who wants to can ultimately migrate to the cloud of his choice.

Platform

This Infrastructure as a Service solution opens the doors to many new possibilities. Because everything runs in a hyper-modern environment, you have direct access to the platform side in which new applications can quickly be used, constructed and composed. These applications are based – among others – on APIs to and from other sources and systems, such as IBM’s solutions for analytics and cognitive computing. All the building blocks with which you can do amazing things within the cloud environment.
