The power of Bluemix in practice

IBM Bluemix is widely known in other countries as a platform for rapid innovation; in the Netherlands, Bluemix does not yet enjoy such a big reputation. Perhaps this has to do with our reticence when it comes to large-scale advertisements and chest-thumping. For example, London’s Heathrow airport is decorated with enormous banners touting the advantages of Bluemix and Watson. Things work a bit differently in the Netherlands,  where we have always questions and want to be convinced with arguments.

Recently I wrote a blog about the partnership between IBM and SLTN, explaining that – based on Bluemix-technology – the IT service provider is opening a ‘Garage’ to make you as a developer, the person responsible for IT or as an innovation manager, more effective and to help you innovate at lower costs. I was asked what type of companies the Bluemix environment would best serve. Is Bluemix most useful for large companies or for small organizations? And is there a particular moment, for example, at which you outgrow the Bluemix environment?

Complete life cycle

The answer is that Bluemix covers the complete life cycle of an application; using Bluemix you can build the application, but you can also manage and run it. In addition, because of its modular nature, you can expand and scale Bluemix endlessly. Bluemix is based on Lego-like components that you can combine to suit your needs. One hundred fifty APIs are available for blockchain, IoT, big data, Watson cognitive and analytics. In my previous blog, I already indicated that in addition to saving you time, this can also save you enormous amounts of money and effort.

IBM Bluemix is thus quite appropriate as an environment in which you can quickly develop something at little cost, test prototypes or create MVPs. If your development adds value for the organization, end-user or other stakeholders, then you continue. Bluemix is also intended for deployment. For example, if a small news service proves successful, you can upscale it to a portal that attracts millions of users.

If you wish to build APIs in addition to the 150 standard services, you can do that within Bluemix, as well. Companies that want to run a developed service in the framework of reliability or compliance within their own company walls and behind their own firewall can consider the Bluemix device for this. A hybrid form of this is a dedicated environment within the IBM Softlayer cloud. It is even possible to ‘unplug’ a device from Bluemix entirely and rewrite it for your own hardware.

Practical experience

In other words, whether your organization is big or small, and no matter what your current development phase: IBM Bluemix is always the right basis for developing, running and scaling your devices.
