Enhance business agility with new cloud-enabling solutions on IBM Z

By May 5, 2020

Today’s business leaders are facing more challenges than ever imagined, racing to deliver services to their clients beyond what they could have expected even a few months ago. To meet those expectations, IT organizations need to accelerate their journey to cloud for mission-critical workloads.

IBM Z® continues to play a key role in running the businesses of the world, and the platform is extremely well positioned to help you on your journey to cloud. We know that as you look to digitally transform your business, you are modernizing existing applications and workloads, while also adopting cloud native development techniques for new ones.

Linux plays a foundational role in offering this flexibility, enabling the ability to build once, deploy anywhere. We recently announced that the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is generally available for IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE, reinforcing the cloud-native world of containers and Kubernetes with the security features, scalability and reliability of IBM’s enterprise servers. Read on to see how new and recent enhancements to IBM Z make it an ideal platform for meeting today’s most challenging cloud workload needs.

NEW: Enable hybrid app development with IBM Wazi

We’ve been working with Red Hat to drive the use of common development tools across the open, hybrid cloud in order to collapse silos that exist across tech stacks today. Today we are announcing availability in June for IBM Wazi for Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces, to help enable the development of hybrid applications spanning IBM Z and multicloud platforms using a standard and open enterprise-wide DevOps toolchain[1].

IBM Wazi for Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces empowers developers by providing a broad set of choices for integrated development environments including a desktop IDE such as Visual Studio Code or Eclipse or a containerized web-based IDE such as Eclipse Che. It also provides developers with a containerized, z/OS sandbox environment for development and test on Red Hat OpenShift running on x86 hardware. Applications can then be deployed into production on native z/OS running on IBM Z.

Developers are able to embrace parallel development on z/OS with Git and leverage a standard CI/CD pipeline with Jenkins as the orchestrator, while staging deployment on popular artifact repos like Artifactory or Nexus. A choice of pipeline orchestration mechanisms is also available, including hosted pipelines such as Azure DevOps, making platform agnostic cloud native development encompassing IBM Z a reality.

Build once, deploy anywhere with Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE

The availability of OpenShift for Z and LinuxONE is a major milestone for both hybrid multicloud and for enterprise computing. Our strategy with Red Hat OpenShift and IBM Cloud Paks is grounded in our point of view that containers and Kubernetes are foundational to the future and provides our clients with the ability to build, run and manage cloud-native applications, to help them avoid lock-in to any one IT infrastructure or cloud provider. On IBM Z, we provide developers with the ability to connect new container-based applications with mission-critical apps and data services available in z/OS through IBM z/OS Cloud Broker.

We have also announced the availability of Red Hat Ansible Certified Content for IBM Z, enabling Ansible users to automate IBM Z applications and IT infrastructure with an upstream open source version offered on Ansible Galaxy. This provides customers with a comprehensive, scalable approach to automation which is foundational for the journey to cloud.
