IBM Cloud Object Storage scores top marks

By February 14, 2018

Gartner recently published its Critical Capabilities for Object Storage in January 2018. As we did in the last publication (October 2016), IBM Cloud Object Storage scored highest overall for the object storage use cases. This year IBM actually scored the highest in every use case.

IBM believes this is a great headline, but we encourage you to go further. There is great content in this paper for those who are considering a new or expanded object storage deployment. Gartner breaks down attributes of object storage you should consider, including metadata implementation, support for file protocols and hybrid cloud storage capabilities.

Gartner highlights five distinct use cases for object storage: Analytics, Archiving, Backup, Content Distribution and Cloud Storage. However, several IBM clients are doing multiples of these use cases on the same object storage cluster. Unlike traditional storage, the more data and use cases you add to IBM Cloud Object Storage, the more value you can create. Advantages in storage efficiency, security and manageability increase with scale; and few have deployed systems at the scale of IBM Cloud Object Storage. A proven solution with a strong ecosystem of ISVs, IBM Cloud Object Storage is certified with multiple backup, archive, collaboration, and file sync and share solutions so you can build the infrastructure you need.

This is the second year Gartner has published this work. These reports are the in-depth complement to their Gartner Distributed File Systems and Object Storage Magic Quadrant published in the fall. (IBM was in the Leaders quadrant in those reports also.) We do not take our strong position for granted. The industry is not standing still, and neither is IBM. We recently added policy-based vaults with Write Once Read Many (WORM) capabilities and concentrated dispersal mode creating a 75 percent reduction in resources for initial configurations. With each release, IBM enhances the solution, adding features and adding value in the solution. For the latest in IBM Cloud Object Storage and the entire IBM Software Defined portfolio, join us for a webcast on February 20, 2018, featuring our first quarter announcements.

IBM Cloud Object Storage System

The on-premises IBM Cloud Object Storage system is a breakthrough platform for storing large amounts of unstructured data. It is designed to provide scalability, availability, security and lower total cost of ownership (TCO). It is available as an integrated storage system or as a software-only solution. In addition, IBM Cloud Object Storage is available as a public cloud service in the IBM Cloud. IBM Cloud Object Storage is ideal for use cases such as remote file collaboration, backup or archive repository, and as a content repository for images, video and voice.

Clients can start with as few as three commodity x86 server nodes or as little as 72 TB of useable storage and grow to petabytes or beyond. By combining a single copy of protected data and the ability to lock down data using WORM storage, this solution is quickly becoming the choice for many industries like finance, healthcare and government that have compliance or other data retention requirements.
